This tour will take you on a fantastic underground journey to discover some of Costa Rica’s history and geology. Barra Honda Caves was formed when islets from the Miocene Era emerged above the plains of the Tempisque River. The caves and waterways were carved by the action of rain filtering through the limestone over 70 million years or more.
It is a unique experience showing all of the cave formations full of stalactites and stalagmites. Its network of limestone stone caverns is decorated with capricious formation rocky, the product of the action of the water on calcium carbonate, the perfect tour for those who like a walk in the forest and adventure.
Barra Honda Caves enjoys 42 caves, including the Nicoa, where Pre-Columbian human remains, artifacts, and jewelry were found dated to approximately 300 BC, and Santa Ana, the deepest cave known in the complex, is unusual for its unique and numerous stalactites and columns. This cave plunges some 787 feet (240 m) into the earth.
Due to its unique underground features, the park is also home to several rare species. These include blind salamanders and endemic fish that have adapted to living in complete darkness.
In addition, it is a special place to make a long walk by the dry forest and enjoy the beauty of the natural scenes that offer their viewpoints and flora and fauna abundant in Barra Honda National Park. Hiking Level: Challenge-Difficult
The hike takes you through the forest, which can be humid or dry, depending on the season. The trails are rocky and can get muddy depending on the rain. To descend to the cave, you have to use rappelling equipment, while you go down on a suspended ladder.
